Grandstaff Canyon is definitely GRAND.  (Previously called Negro Bill)

It speaks highly of a trail if it can be even more spectacular in the snow and winter as it is in the other months.  This is that trail and more.  As I was walking, I was shocked at the Grandness of this hike.  I wondered, how do you ever describe this?  The river is so beautiful that you get to walk along and cross over multiple times.  The cliffs are just huge and GRAND in their size and they are in front of you, and on both sides of you.   Even though it is hard to come up with words, I will say I I thought the Grandness paralleled the Grandness of God.  I will say I was filled with awe. I felt humble and small, just as I feel when I think of our Heavenly Father, but our Heavenly Father does not want us to feel small, HE loves you more than you could possibly imagine, and that love is huge and GRAND like this canyon.

I love hikes that are around 4-5 miles and have a WOW moment of something beautiful at the end.  This trail  perfectly fits that.  It has this cool arch at the end.  The 5 miles is a wonderful workout, yet it does not feel that long, for it is so interesting.  You are constantly crossing rivers, and the terrain is fun to navigate.  So now that you know that I really LOVED this trail, let me help you be aware of the dangers on this trail.

IF YOU HIKE THIS CANYON IN WINTER..

1.  YOU NEED SPIKES OR CRAMPONS.

I always have my spikes or Crampons in my backpack when it is Winter Months, for they are SO handy to making slick trails very easy to handle.  I headed out on this trail, and was barely out of the parking lot and hadn't even started the conversation with myself about putting on the Spikes when I hit a slab of ice and was on my but before I could even blink.  Broke my tailbone again. (I am hopefully that I might have a chance to realign it though for it healed crocked last time. So looking on the positive side of things. )  I would be so appreciative if you considered checking out these spikes.  I promise you will love having them on your next winter hike.

2.  YOU NEED WATERPROOF SHOES, BOOTS, or SOCKS.

This trail crosses the river more times than I can remember.  With that many crossings, you are bound to get your feet into the water at least once.  I had my Waterproof  Hoka One One Boots on, and even though I got a little more into the water I than would have hoped, my feet were still dry and happy.

360 Trail Walking Towards the Morning Glory Natural Bridge Arch

The arch is so close to the cliff wall behind, that you can miss it in the 360 image if you are not paying attention.  It is to the just in front of me and to the right a little.

It is fun to see Morning Glory Natural Bridge arch from the front, but it is also fun to see it from above.  Here is an image of the arch from above.  You can see that there is only that 15 feet or so crack between the cliff behind it, and the arch in front.

Google maps does a great job finding this trail head, and the trail is very well marked.  As you are traveling to Moab from the North turn left on UT-128 and it is only about 3 miles down that road. i would suggest you download the map of the area on Google Maps before you go, and have an EXTERNAL GPS Receiver. This Garmin one is great.

If you want to pair this hike with another cool hike, just down UT-128 a few more miles you will find Fisher Towers.  Fisher Towers is another Amazing Hike that is bound to please.
